She survived the war--but what she did to survive haunted her for twenty-five years.

She survived the war—but what she did to survive haunted her for years.

Kentucky, 1862. With two sons fighting for the Union and another for the Confederacy, Annie Claiborne watches the Civil War divide her family before it reaches her doorstep.

When Confederate soldiers commandeer the family cave to produce saltpeter for gunpowder, an explosion kills her husband, leaving Annie to protect those who remain.

As slavery loosens its grip and loyalties fracture, survival demands choices she can never undo. Twenty-five years later, Annie finally writes her son the truth—about the war, the dead, and what she did to survive.

Thank you for hiring me for yet another fun job. I really got into this manuscript. In fact, there was at least one night when I hit my daily page count, then just kept going because I wanted to know what happened next!" — Kristy Phillips, Professional Editor (Petticoats and Ash)

I believe that is his finest book that i have read. It was filled with realism and was authentic and full of sadness built on faith and trust. The characters were real and relatable. His understanding of historical significance was clear and the civil war came alive in the pages. The story was believable when it should have felt unbelievable. I loved the book. I hope this one finds its way into readers hands. It resonates with love and trust and faith and a solid foundation of God. He did a beautiful job. I am so glad I read it. It was the perfect length. He left me wanting more.
